Peru suffers from extremely high unemployment and poverty rates. The unemployment rate in northern Peru reaches over 60 percent, with 64 percent of families living on less than $1 a day. Countless families survive on a budget of under $30 a month, with many families living in sandy, desert areas without water, sewer systems, and sometimes without electricity. Those that are employed are often underpaid, have to work long hours, and labor more than five days a week, including holidays and Sundays. Many Peruvians leave to find work in other countries, only to encounter similar problems.
Empowering Nations is continuing to explore opportunities for volunteers to serve in the Sacred Valley of the Inca near Cusco, Peru with Eagle Condor Humanitarian. Please check back for updates on our projects in Peru or contact Sarah Parson at empoweringnations@gmail.com.
