The Republic of Mozambique is situated on the southeast coast of Africa.  With a population hovering around 20 million people, it is a country that has suffered harsh colonial rule, a long and horrific civil war, and devastating floods in 2000 that left hundreds of thousands homeless. Mozambique is currently ranked the 6th poorest country in the world and has the dubious distinction of having the lowest life expectancy rate on earth – 34 years.  It has one of the highest HIV/AIDS infection rates in Africa, with a 26 percent infection rate in the Sofala Province, where our partner Care for Life, works.  It is estimated that there will be 1.2 million orphans in the region by the end of this decade.  Unemployment hovers around 90 percent with most people left to eke out a living by subsistence farming.  It is also a country where human beings still tragically starve to death.

Empowering Nations is excited to partner with Care for Life, a non-profit organization committed to alleviating suffering, promoting self-reliance, and instilling hope among the people of Mozambique.  Founded in 2000, in Arizona, the new CFL Family Preservation Program is designed to assist in the creation of “permanency” in households that are considered “the poorest of the poor.”  More often than not these are orphan-led households with children as young as 14 years of age taking care of multiple siblings younger than themselves.  This program works directly to improve the well-being of these children and ensures that a child at risk not only survives, but thrives through the combined efforts of the family, the community as a whole, and the Care for Life partnership.  The goal is to create successful families that facilitate children’s growth, development, and protection within an empowered community. CFL is dedicated to the idea that “one can make a difference.”
